Introduction Immigration patterns in recent years have resulted in demographic changes in English-speaking countries such as Canada, Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom (Ashworth, 2000; Coelho, 1994a; Parkin & Sidnell, 1992). These patterns have brought learners with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds into the school systems of these countries. The challenge for school jurisdictions in these countries is to adjust their pedagogy, teacher education, and teaching resources in order to meet the educational needs of learners from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds (Spangenberg Urbschat & Pritchard, 1994).
